BASIC INTERNET SAFETY TIPS

  • Make sure students are given instruction on Internet Safety (see resources page for information on curriculum, videos, and other learning activities pertaining to Internet safety)
  • Explain and enforce school district Internet Safety and Acceptable Use Policies
  • Strongly encourage students to maintain privacy and refrain from posting personal information
  • Advise students to use avatars and aliases instead of actual photos and real names when appropriate
  • Set privacy settings on tools to the highest levels and monitor to ensure these levels are maintained
  • Model good Internet behavior yourself
  • Have a plan for what to do if a student reports they are being harrassed, bullied, hacked or otherwise bothered while online (or offline for that matter)
  • Remember that diamonds are forever and so is most information you post online

Doug Johnson, Mankato Public Schools, has written a great blog post "A Dozen Ways to Teach Ethical and Safe Technology Use." He has some great tips in his article.
